The largest port in Europe, sitting on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas River in South Holland, Rotterdam is currently going through somewhat of a renaissance. The fact that it has the highest proportion of non-western foreign residents of any city in the Netherlands lends it a multicultural buzz. There are also urban renewal projects featuring ambitious architecture, an increasingly sparkling nightlife, and a host of summer festivals, such as the Caribbean-inspired 'Summer Carnival', the Dance Parade, Rotterdam 666 and the Metropolis Pop Festival. Added to the International Film Festival in January and Poetry International Festival in June, these make Rotterdam a real event city.
